And you know what sucketh mightily? Miscalculating the amount of fabric.
So, I'm waiting to hear from fabric-store.com about the stability of their dye lots so that I can order an extra yard of each (so that I can have sleeves!) -- or just bite the bullet and get enough and use what I have to make a parti-colored outfit. And parti-colored is actually where I'm leaning.

aaaaaargh. Gulf Wars is a little over a week away. Tentative leave date is the 10th.
I've got the crud. :-( So NOT the most robustly healthy person. I don't want to head out if I don't have the stamina to unload the van and set up the tent and stuff. I don't want to head out if the first few nights are (as they tend to want to be) in the 30s/40s. I think that would be a really bad idea.
I AM scheduled to teach the intro embroidery class M, W, and Friday. There may be a "silhouette of fashion class" too, I don't know if they got that email. Looks like the spreadsheet hasn't been updated. I'll find out when I get there! :-) At least the Solar and the Embroidery class(es) made the schedule! Just have to prep the kits and burn the CDs.

The Friday 5 -- FLOWERS

All of them! When my friend H. passed, the story was related by one of her daughters about when her aunt had passed. She was a child, and this was in Rural Appalachia, and they were waiting on the undertaker. H. said that she walked into the room where her sister had just died, and the girl sat up, looked at her and said "The flowers! They SING!

It's been a very long semester. There must needs be an installment of stories (probably tomorrow). This semester absolutely kicked by rear, and I loved every minute of it. I got to teach General Botany for the very first time since I've been teaching -- and every bit of it had to be created from scratch. The labs, the lectures everything. But, it was a blast. Kicked my butt! Summer starts on Monday, but it's only for a month.
And I've been sick. I was sick right after I went home for a few days. It's flared up again over the last few. Finally broke down and went to the clinic. I have a tendency to let sinus infections go until I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired -- because (in part) they don't want to give you antibiotics for them any more. Apparently, most sinus infections are self limiting. And then there was the issue of how the antibiotics would treat the already upset gut. *sigh*
I do have kitties. Bob is curled up at my hip, and Belle is on my shins. Fionn is climbed *up* on something. That cat loves to climb (generally stuff that I don't want him on!)
With any luck I'll get some sewing done tomorrow. I think I feel better tonight -- but I don't want to overdo it. It will be a short, but intense summer. Class is 4 days a week, and every class is a week of Regular Semester. The ugly downside of being sick is that I'm fairly sure that I'm not going to make Kingdom A&S this weekend. I just don't think that I"m up for a 400 miles drive (one way) on top of everything else. :-( I have, however, started plans for next year. The only materials that I'm gonna want that I don't have is a draw plate and dowel for Viking Wire Weaving.
I've done quite a bit of genealogy over the last couple of days -- got everything that I have from the great-grandparents on down entered. Now, I've got to check the data/information -- and start the verification/documentation stuff. Played some with the 1940 census, too. Have it for the parents and the inlaws. Kinda cool.
and I forgot to hit "post" before I went to bed last night. Shows the crappiness of the brain/body. *sigh* I think I *feel* better this morning, but the face is screaming at me, and that's to be expected. The battle of Helm's Deep is going on in there and the re-enforcements have arrived.

I really don't have any kits made up or anything. *sigh* But the teach-y basket is prepped and ready to go! (Dang! Just remembered that I hadn't printed any alphabets for the purl class -- I suspect that they're too small, but we'll manage!) I was hoping to leave this morning, but it didn't happen. I didn't want to have to set up after dark ... AGAIN (done it for the last two times that I've been). OTOH, I can set up my tent by myself in 15 minutes (not counting staking the dang thing down. :-D Makes me happy.
Right now, the garb is in the van, the ginormous Rubbermaid tub of Embroidery Stuff is in the van, the *HUGE* (empty) cooler is in the van, the tent and the bed are in the van. Basically, I just need bedding, food, the cameras, the laptop and me and I'm on the road.
I'm so going to miss the cats. Man, I really hate to leave them! The department secretary is going to feed them a couple of times while I'm gone. (Don't panic, they're going to have plenty of kibble -- she's just going to come in and open some gooshie food for them!) I think that they know something is up, too. :-(
I'm waiting on the other shoe to drop. Last year, I decided fairly early that I wasn't going to die. Either the father-in-law was going to still be alive and I was going to be in TN -- or he wasn't and I was still going to need to be in TN. I was sick. (You know, if an altoids Cinnamon tries to go down "the wrong way," it's *really* interesting! O_o)
The 2 years before that, I had planned to go and got sick each time. The first year I was here, spring break was the wrong week. You can see why I'm kinda antsy, right?

See, I got the ones I'd been wearing in January of last year, and I was never really happy with them. Finally I realized that it was just the right lens -- I was skewing the fit on my face and pushing them up and all kinds of contortions to be able to see my laptop screen properly.
So I go back to the doc, and tell them that I think that the lens is ground wrong. "Nope. It matches the prescription." So they run me through the whole "what prescription do you need" exam again and proclaim that the prescription is correct.
me: so why can't I see?
them: dunno. Let's adjust the sit of the glasses on your face and see if that makes any difference.
well not so much.
screw it. I saw the doc that gave me the last pair when I was home for Christmas. I LOVED those glasses. It was my 3rd pair of progressives, and the best ever. They absolutely ROCKED!.
So according to Joe, the astigmatism correction in the right lens, is wrong -- and not only that, the type of grind on the bifocal/progressive lens is DIFFERENT for each eye (and it's apparently not supposed to be that way!).
So I got new lenses and they're in. Only problem is that the frames have to be shipped back to Tennessee so that the lenses can be cut to fit. So I dug out the old glasses -- crappy finish on the lenses and all. I can see better with them than I could the new ones.
*sigh*
The old frames get shipped out tomorrow.

I just found about a third death among my circle of friends. First was Scott. Then Baron Bryan (Mad Dog) -- his mother died, and then a fellow that I went to high school was killed in a motorcycle accident. He'd had a rough life, but ....
and Kevin and Jeremy (other friends) are in the hospital and ....
Enough! Universe, I'm putting you on notice. This is **ENOUGH**

Somebody, somewhere (and I don't remember if it was here on DW, of LJ or even FB) in a discussion of why Wicca and other faiths were't "pagan" (because Pagan implies "Christian unbeliever" for lack of a better definition) but that they were just Other Faiths. Anyway, this particular link discussed the pantheon that was involved in Creation and then Yahweh went off and did His Own Thing (from which Christianity evolved/descended).
Does anybody remember that link? Can you point me to it?

We've been using Advantage II, but the cats REALLY don't seem to like it. It must burn like crazy. If Bob sees me dose either Fionn or Belle, she hides and not even gooshie food can bring her out. This past time, I didn't dose her at all, and it doesn't seem to have been a problem.
Does she just have sensitive skin? Does Advantage burn more than Frontline?

The exam for tomorrow is done and photocopied. The lab quiz is done; all the papers are graded. I can spend tonight (after I get back from Knit-Wits at the library) and tomorrow night getting ready for my trip. On the road again .......
Half my brain is busy telling me that there's way too much stuff to get done, and I'll never get it done in time -- the other half just sits there and laughs.

May. 27th, 2011 10:06 pmI know. Don't faint. I just have time to post more now! (Just think, if I ever manage to get another job with a lighter teaching load, this might get to be a regular occurrence! :-D
The tunic is finished. I did a rolled hem at the neckline. The apron is (for all practical purposes) finished. The straps are on (and Wright Trim thinks that the color of the apron is Yale Blue. It will not photograph properly!). I don't have the trim on, though. When I went to get more bias tape, the color red that I have, they don't make any more.
So, I do have enough of the red that I had to trim the top of the apron. It's 0.5" wide -- I bought the red that they did have and it's 1.0" wide.
Now, the narrower trim is an orange-r red; the wider trim is a blue-r red. They both look RED apart, but when you have them together, the color difference is noticeable. And I can't decide which one I like best.
*sigh*
And the event isn't until NEXT Saturday ..... :-D

May. 26th, 2011 01:42 pmThe hangerok (or does it have 2 Rs ....) is hemmed. All it needs are the straps and the trim. I'm going with cathyr19355's suggestion to go with the red tape. It just looks so smashing against the blue apron.
The tunic is "finished" -- well, it's hemmed, and all the threads are tied. Lordy but I loathe tying threads! I say "finished" because I've not finished the neckline yet. I'm just looking at that cut edge, and I'm not quite sure what to do. Cut some facings, I guess! I know that's the modern response to a cut edge, but I'm just not certain at all. I'm not certain if I can hem it -- curved edge and all that.
And somebody please tell me why I have a penchant for selecting lovely drape-y fabrics that ravel at the drop of a hat? I think I'd almost rather work on Velvet! (Velvet ants. bwahahahahaha!)

I love my husband dearly, but he can't pin a hem to save his soul. One pin every 6-12" isn't enough -- and on slick fabric, you don't just run it through once!

Right now, I ain't doing none of it. I got the pictures posted that I really needed to get posted -- but I'm just lumped up here on the bed with Bob (the cat) curled up beside me not doing nuttin'
Being able to "do nuttin'" is a really nice feeling. I think I"m going to enjoy it for a while longer. I did get into a little bit of poison ivy when I was weeding, though. :-( It's not too bad.
Looks like May Tourney is going to be a stormy one. I *really* hope not!

monstrous list of doom
Feb. 18th, 2011 09:43 pmI have such a hellacious to-do list between now and Spring Break. I wish I was going to Gulf War (a big SCA event), but it's not happening this year.
Anyway, the father-in-law died the 30th of January, and then I got a sinus infection, and then I got the flu. And it's been a nightmare ever since. I can't shake this crap because I can't stop and spend a week in bed. *sigh* All of which is complicating the To-Do List.
Lab Midterms start next week. They do lab midterms here so that students don't hit the Lab Final (a lab practical) not knowing what they're in for! And I've got to tweak one, and make out another -- then there are the lecture exams Thursday and Friday. Thanks to being sick and my hellacious schedule, as much of it needs to be done this weekend as possible. Mondays and Wednesdays I'm talking from 11-5; Tuesday I go from 9:30-8:30 (with a break between 3 and 5 -- except there will be a review for the exam during that time this week). By the time Thursday gets here, I'm just toast.

He's one of my babies. He and his sister Belle are the two newest additions to the household. I did find homes for the other 3 kittens -- the husband has 2 of them, and the child has the 3rd. Anyway, Tux has been "mending up" -- shoot, he looks like he's about to drop a large litter of kittens. We went to the vet yesterday. Feline Infectious Peritonitis. :-( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_infectious_peritonitis Just major suckage. It's a mutated coronavirus; at least it's not contagious -- the other 3 cats are probably fine. Tux is the only one showing symptoms.

Mondays and Wednesdays I'm talking from 11-5; Tuesday I go from 9:30-8:30 (with a break between 3 and 5 -- except there will be a review for the exam during that time this week). By the time Thursday gets here, I'm just toast.

And the most depressing news of the week. This is Tux
He's one of my babies. He and his sister Belle are the two newest additions to the household. I did find homes for the other 3 kittens -- the husband has 2 of them, and the child has the 3rd. Anyway, Tux has been "mending up" -- shoot, he looks like he's about to drop a large litter of kittens. We went to the vet yesterday. It's a mutated coronavirus; at least it's not contagious -- the other 3 cats are probably fine. Tux is the only one showing symptoms.
